New disc golf course in Mansfield to host county competition – Mansfield District Council

Mansfield’s new disc golf course is to host a county championship competition this weekend.

The course, installed at Mansfield’s award-winning King George V Park, opened in August and is already impressing local players.

Zoe Winfield, the Chair of Nottinghamshire Disc Golf Club (link to club’s Facebook group opens in new window), said the club was delighted to be working in partnership with the council to host its 2022 Annual Club Championship on Sunday 6 November.

The competition will involve players from around the county in a competition recognised and endorsed by the Professional Disc Golf Association, a global organisation based in the USA.

She said: “We are thrilled that Mansfield District Council has provided the first permanent 18-hole course in the county. Notts now has a fantastic mix of courses providing the opportunity for beginners through to advanced.

“The disc golf course at King George V Park is a wonderful addition, giving players value for money and a fun challenge to test players’ skills against a forgiving, yet tricky course which flows well with the existing pitch and putt facility.”

The club is hoping the Mansfield course will be able to host national events in future.

Disc golf involves throwing a Frisbee-like disc into a series of metal baskets in the lowest number of throws, and the course in Mansfield is now among a handful in the area.

The game was invented 40 years ago in North America and has since taken off around the world and even become a professional sport.

The council is also planning to add foot golf at the park, too. This is played just like golf but using a normal football and larger holes instead of clubs and golf balls.

The new courses are expected to attract an extra 6,000 to 10,000 visits a year to the park. The increased income from the new attractions are expected to enable the council to take on extra staff to extend the opening of the facilities to include weekends, bank holidays and early evenings during the summer months.

The disc golf and pitch and putt course at King George V Park, off Black Scotch Lane, are open from 7am to 4pm on weekdays, excluding bank holidays.

Cllr Andy Burgin, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Leisure, said: “The course is a fantastic new addition to the facilities at King George V Park.

“It is very much in line with the council’s wider aim to encourage people in the district to take part in more sport and physical activity and increase the number of visitors to the area.”

The council has signed up to the UK Disc Golf membership scheme which enables members to play free of charge. Members should bring their membership card with them in order to play for free.

For non UK Disc Golf members, the prices are the same as the pitch and putt: The costs are:
• Adult (per round) – £5
• Junior/OAP (per round) £2.50
• Adult (season ticket) – £135
• Junior/OAP (season ticket) – £65

To book a round for the pitch and putt or disc golf, call 01623 463463. The council can accept cash payments. Contactless payments will soon be available.
