Thieves get away with thousands in new disc golf equipment from Devou Park

New disc golf baskets installed at Devou Park over the weekend opened to much excitement, but the fun was short-lived. The baskets were put in Friday, with a grand opening on Saturday. “Unofficially, we had approximately 700 play-throughs in just the few days that it’s been open,” said Covington Parks and Recs director Ben Oldiges. Tuesday, people woke up to the news that multiple of the 18 baskets were stolen from the course. “Someone through the night had basically stolen 12 of the, what they call the whole baskets and destroyed a 13th one,” said Covington communications director Dan Hassert. “Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for a basket to go taken out of a course, but usually it’s one at a time, it’s not, you know, like a dozen baskets,” said co-owner of The Nati Disc Golf Jason Kerl. Police said the thieves caused $5,000 to $6,000 in damage. “This was not a simple act of vandalism, this was a coordinated theft,” Hassert said. Based on the size of the baskets that someone got away with, Hassert said the thief would’ve had to have a big truck or trailer. The driver even left behind damage in the park. “We saw where they had driven off the road, through the woods to get to these and had destroyed or damaged some of the trees,” Hassert said. If you have any information on who may have stolen the baskets, give Covington police a call. This is a felony punishable with up to five years in prison. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 859-292-2271.
