VW has started entering the fully electric vehicle market. The ID.3 is one of the first all-electric Volkswagens, and if there’s a manufacturer that knows how to build a great car for the people, it is Volkswagen.

The ID.3 is a great combination of functional, stylish and practical with a long range, plenty of space in the interior and a decent driving experience with smooth steering and good acceleration. It’s certainly one of the best all-round electric cars on the road, and it’s inexpensive, too. Below are 10 things we love about the VW ID.3.

Good exterior styling

Electric cars are primarily built for function, but that doesn’t mean they can’t look good. The ID.3 is a great example of electric car styling.

Comparisons to the newer Golf should come as no surprise as both are VW vehicles and the modern and sleek design generally matches the ID.3 perfectly. Sporty accents are rare, which is good, especially since the car doesn’t want to fool anyone. What is there, however, are some subtle black details along a sleek and beautifully sculpted exterior that make it look as good as any other hatchback or small SUV on the road today.

9
Good range

Of course, all EVs are about range, as this is the number one reason most would buy one. Depending on the equipment, the ID.3 manages at least 200 miles at a time, up to 330 miles for the highest end model of the VW.

These are some numbers for range and are better than what you’d find on the rival Citroën e-C4, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and the newest model, the Nissan Leaf. If range is what you’re looking for, it’s hard to find a better car than the ID.3 in the same price range.

Spacious and refined interior

One area where the car dwarfs its rivals is the interior. Inside, the interior space is huge, with plenty of room in terms of head and legroom. There are various shelves and a huge glove compartment, especially in the doors and the center console.

The interior is also attractively designed and not sporty, but functional and offers plenty of access to everything you need. Though it’s all about the styling theme, the ID.3 comes with some interesting, Tesla-like white splashes for a more modern and up-to-date feel that doesn’t seem too out of place.

Types of models

Since the ID.3 is one of VW’s first purpose-built electric cars, they have doubled in size through a few other specs. The different model specs offered are Life, Style, Family, Max, Tour, Business and Tech. To cut a long story short, the differences essentially consist of changes to the wheels, comfort package options, driver assistance options, and sport and design packages.

Some models also have different battery choices. There are a total of four options for this, ranging from the cheapest option with the lowest range called Pure Performance to Pro, Pro Performance and the highest Pro S with the greatest range.

Good tech and infotainment system

VW has kept the modern theme going in the ID.3 with an interesting infotainment system. Clearly inspired by Tesla, the VW comes with a few visual effects on the screens, like the spinning ID.3 model that you can see here. The ID.3 is equipped with a 10-inch infotainment screen as standard, which is competitive with similar vehicles in its category.

If you choose one of the higher quality models, you will even be pampered with a panoramic sliding roof and an improved audio system. Elsewhere, you get Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality and wireless smartphone charging in a well-thought-out interior.

5
Good practicality

As a family hatchback, practicality is crucial, and the ID.3 from VW offers a lot in everyday life. For starters, the ID.3 comes with a 385 liter rear cargo space, which is quite large for a car of its size.

Charging is also particularly fast, even the mid-range option can go from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes. As a 5-door, there is of course a lot of comfort when getting in and out and the 5 seats make it perfect to transport a whole family in full comfort.

Driving experience and performance

Perhaps the last thing a potential ID.3 driver thinks about is performance, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth talking about. Surprisingly, the ID.3 is rear-wheel drive and the placement of the battery gives it excellent weight distribution, which massively supports the driving experience.

It also has very light steering that makes turning a breeze. Stronger options also have enough power to provide good acceleration and help a little in transporting lots of passengers and luggage, and add a little extra momentum.

3
Comfort

The VW is a family car and comfort is essential for a good driving experience. It’s undeniable, the ID.3’s interior is well thought out and decently put together, but it’s not an expensive feeling as some cheaper plastics are still on display.

However, the seats are nice and offer more than enough comfort, especially for the price. VW makes up for the lack of expensive materials with features like air conditioning and heated seats in the front. Note that the more expensive models are improving in this area.

2
Safety and driver assistance functions

Potential customers will be delighted when the ID.3 has received excellent ratings in terms of crash test safety and safety features. The ID.3 received 5/5 stars in the Euro NCAP safety test.

Its safety systems were also highly rated, including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian monitoring, driver drowsiness alarm, dynamic traffic sign display, adaptive cruise control with evasive assistance and lane departure warning, to name just a few. These are also standard and make the ID.3 incredibly valuable as a family car.

Inexpensive

The pricing for the ID.3 could make it the new champion as an entry-level mid-range electric hatchback. Prices start at around $ 39,000 and rise to around $ 50,000 depending on features and options.

For an electric car, that’s remarkably competitive. Given that most of the features we talked about before are available on even the lowest end model, the ID.3 looks like a bargain in a market where electric cars are far from cheap. The only downside is perhaps the few cheaper materials that can be seen in the interior.
