HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. (WDVM) – With so many seniors in Berkeley County closing down due to COVID, home delivery of meals has played an especially important role. Some grateful golfers came together on Wednesday to show their support.

Woods and irons weren’t the only things these golfers brought with them; they also brought their generosity with them. Residents of The Woods in Hedgesville thanked Berkeley County Meals on Wheels on 18 scenic golf holes. The past year has been a challenge.

“We were open every day during the pandemic. We never closed. There was no interruption in service and we had to rely on getting creative because we lost a lot of our volunteer drivers because they are seniors themselves, ”said Dianne Waldron, Berkeley County Meals on Wheels coordinator.

These followers not only opened their checkbooks on the driving range and putting green; last year they were at the forefront.

“There are 26 volunteer residents here at Woods who ride on wheels to eat,” said Karen Schroder of the Woods Women’s Golf Association.

Wendy Smith is the Treasurer of the Woods Women’s Golf Association. Her own mother received a delivery of meals on wheels during COVID. Smith saw firsthand the impact of meals on wheels in Berkeley County.

“I mean, COVID shut everything down. If someone knocks on your door and you haven’t seen anyone in a week, it makes your day better, ”said Smith.

Cindy Gresham is President of the Woods Women’s Golf Association. She says supporting Berkley County Meals on Wheels wasn’t a difficult decision since COVID has been hit so hard.

“Many elderly people in the area cannot go shopping themselves. Some can’t even cook properly. Unfortunately, families were very reluctant to visit older family members, ”said Gresham.

Ron Springer is The Woods’ leading professional golfer. Charities on his course are not uncommon, he said, but this one is special.

“It is important to our members here that they help out with the meals on wheels here in Berkeley County,” says Springer.
