Neangar Park Golf Club was named a finalist for Golf Australia’s Visionary of the Year Award.
The national award recognizes clubs across the country who lead by example and show initiative to help the sport grow with strong leadership toward gender equality and overall long-term systemic change.
“We are very aware of some problems in the golf sector,” said club president Phil DeAraugo.
“Some of the things we have done are lay the foundations for the future participation of women in golf, including changing our bylaws so that our board structure has equal positions for men and women.
“We also introduced gender-neutral competitions so that men and women can play together.”
NPGC women captain Jenny Brown said there has been significant growth towards the club’s goal of general gender equality.
“It’s much better now because we previously had two committees that didn’t share minutes or inform each other of what was going on.
“I was on the board when there were fewer women and I especially enjoyed this year because women are a little braver together.”
Brown also praised the introduction of gender-neutral weekly competitions.
“We had open competitions and we recently had our first female monthly medal winner on a Saturday that we were all excited about,” she said.
“It shows that women can compete with men.”
In addition to making long-term changes towards gender equality, DeAraugo said that Neangar Park was recognized for its other initiatives – including the introduction of a pitch ‘n’ putt course.
“Both pitch ‘n’ putt and driving range are two big projects that are helping get people into the game,” he said.
Brown said the driving range and pitch ‘n’ putt are other great ways to attract new players to the sport.
“The driving range is a great way to introduce people, especially women, to golf and when we are on the pitch ‘n’ putt it will be more fun for everyone.”
Joe Sinnott, general manager of NPGC, said it was common sense for the club to seek greater gender equality in golf.
“After we saw all of the statistics on how little women are involved, it had to be improved,” said Sinnott.
“We then decided to work on improving it as best we could.”
NPGC is one of four clubs to be named a finalist, with the overall winner being determined by the golf community.
