TinCaps left-handed Danny Denz was named High-A Central Pitcher of the Week on Monday after leading Fort Wayne to two wins against the Lansing Lugnuts.
Denz hit 92/3 shutout innings in his two starts against Lansing, surrendering only two hits and hitting 10 against two walks. He threw five shutout innings in a 3-1 win at Fort Wayne on Tuesday and followed with a 42/3 shutout, hitless innings in a 12-1 triumph on Sunday.
The TinCaps put their no-hitter in the seventh inning on Sunday.
“I just came in with a plan prepared to attack the hitters and compete with my stuff,” Denz said in a press release. “I know my defense will play and I just wanted to attack the zone with all my seats.”
TBT finals tonight
The championship game of the basketball tournament, a $ 1 million winner-take-all event, takes place today at 9:00 p.m. between Boeheim’s Army and Team23, with several former Mad Ants in play. Boeheim’s Army, a Syracuse alumni team, has CJ Fair. Team 23 consists of Walt Lemon Jr., E. Victor Nickerson, and Marcus Hall. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
Carroll QB chooses college
Carroll Senior Quarterback Jeff Becker announced that he has signed up to play football in the state of South Dakota. Becker had an All-SAC first team and an IFCA class 6A junior all-state team selection last year.
Shoaff course closes for day
The Shoaff Park golf course and driving range will be closed on Saturday for a Fort4Fitness event. Although the rest of Shoaff Park is open, visitors should expect heavy traffic and limited parking. McMillen Park and Foster Park will remain open for golf that day.
Mastodons’ Miller honored
Purdue Fort Wayne men’s golfer Luke Miller was named an All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America. To be admitted to Division I, an individual must have participated in 40% of their team’s competition rounds, have a batting average below 76.0, and maintain a cumulative career grade average of at least 3.2. Miller averaged 75.36 strokes last season. Homestead graduate Ellis Yoder was a Division II award winner for Bentley University.
Blackhawks publish results
The Chicago Blackhawks undertake to publish the results of an independent investigation into allegations that an assistant coach sexually abused two players in 2010, or that the NHL was not reported to the police at the time. He and then coach Joel Quenneville have announced that they will be working together. The investigation came after two lawsuits were filed against the team. The first alleges sexual assault by Aldrich during the team’s race for the 2010 Stanley Cup title, and the second was filed by a former student Aldrich convicted of assault in Michigan.
Spartans call Brooks trainers
Manchester University announced that men’s assistant coach Chad Brooks was named head coach after Corey Brueggeman accepted a position as director of men’s football operations at Ohio State.
