– View the best of the rest
Wearing the right golf clothing for the conditions is vital and the best place to start is a good quality base layer, an essential garment for every year-round golfer’s wardrobe.
In our book a decent base layer is absolutely fundamental if you’re planning to play in cold conditions as keeping your body at a comfortable temperature will always help you perform better and give you the best chance of shooting lower scores.
And, thanks to moisture wicking fabrics and UV protection, the very best base layers can also help keep the body cool and dry when the sun does shine on the golf course.
We believe that if you buy one and buy well then you won’t need another for years to come.
Of course a base layer won’t protect you and your equipment from all of the elements, which is why we’ve produced guides on the best waterproof jackets, waterproof trousers, waterproof golf shoes, mid-layers and winter golf gloves to help you complete your winter wardrobe.
And if you’re in any doubt as to whether layering is actually any more effective than just wearing a thick jumper, our pro tested if bulky clothes harm your golf swing.

Best Golf Base Layers
1. ZeroFit HeatRub Ultimate Base Layer
RRP £60 | VIEW OFFER
Sizes S-XL | Colours Black, Grey | Materials 68% Acrylic, 21% Nylon, 21% Polyester, 7% Wool, 2% Polyurethane
Zerofit are a Japanese invention, and the garment’s name spells out exactly how the product works.
The Heatrub uses friction with the skin to create warmth, a really clever development. The way the layer interacts with your skin takes a little getting used to, so it may be worth wearing it before your first round, but from our experience the Heatrub is the warmest baselayer we’ve ever worn.
2. Galvin Green Ethan Base Layer
RRP £69 | VIEW OFFER
Sizes S-XXL Colours Navy, Grey | Materials 95% Polyester, 5% Elastane
In our book, a roll or turtleneck design is absolutely imperative for any winter baselayer. The extra material just gives a little more comforting protection around the neck when the conditions turn nasty.
Galvin Green produce fantastic products to ensure you can remain comfortable on the golf course regardless what the weather throws at you and the Ethan is the ideal starting point for your winter layering. It has a relaxed fit, is stretchy and breathable and also quick drying. As with all Galvin cold weather base layers, the Ethan is ideally paired with the Elof Skintight Thermal Leggings.
3. Under Armour ColdGear Mock Base Layer
RRP £65 | VIEW OFFER
Sizes S-XXL | Colours Galaxy Black, Grey Wolf, Royal Blue | Materials 87% Polyester, 13% Elastane
Under Armour started the whole baselayer trend, so you really won’t go wrong by plumping for one of their models. ‘Infrared’ technology uses a thermo conductive pattern on the inside which absorbs and retains body heat. The polyester and elastane material also wicks moisture away from the body quickly to ensure you stay dry and fresh throughout your round.
The four-way stretch fabric allows you to swing freely while the UA Storm tech also helps to repel water if you’re caught in a shower before getting your waterproofs on. Decent colour options help you match it to your chosen outfit so you can always look the part, even on the days when your game doesn’t!

The latest base layer concept in Galvin’s Skintight range (which uses compression to stimulate blood flow), the thermal Elmo has been developed to provide genuine warmth in very cold conditions and, in our experience, it really works.

Just like the Elmo, the Edwin base layer is from Galvin’s Skintight thermal range (which uses compression to stimulate blood flow) and is capable of tackling the coldest conditions you’ll encounter on the course.
It has a regular fit and uses Bluesign approved fabric, meaning this is an eco-friendly layer. It is extremely stretchy so you won’t experience any restrictions in the swing and, thanks to the hi-tech fibres, is impressively breathable to ensure you remain comfortable even if you’re having a hot round! The stand-up turtle neck styling is always a big attraction for us when it comes to cold weather gear, and the quick drying material does exactly as it claims.
The seam positions have been cleverly altered to ensure maximum comfort throughout the swing, while the four-way stretch fabric ensures freedom of movement.
The antibacterial finish means it won’t hold smells and we love the array of colour choices to ensure it can be matched to your favourite golf outfit.

We appreciate that not everyone can (or wants to) spend £50 or more on a base layer, especially if you don’t play golf on as regular basis during the off-season. Whatever your reason for seeking a lower budget base layer, the Inesis is a great option – after all, there’s not much golf apparel that costs less than £15!
The CW50 eass designed at the French brand’s northern France base and works best between 0°C and 10°C.
It may not provide the same levels of warmth or tech as some of the offerings on this page, but it performs impressively, especially when used as the first part of a layering system. It is impressively lightweight, allows the body to breath and moves well throughout the swing.
And don’t forget your legs…
1. Galvin Green Elof Skintight Thermal Leggings
RRP £69 | VIEW OFFER
Sizes S-XXL | Colours Black | Materials 95% Polyester, 5% Elastane
Considering the role your lower body plays in the golf swing, keeping it warm on course is just as important as the upper body. Thankfully, Galvin Green realise that, and their Elof Skintight thermal leggings are fantastic
Made from a revolutionary thermal insulating fabric the leggings trap body heat and the advanced knitting techniques and highly technical fibres allow for complete breathability. The incredible moisture wicking tech moves any droplets of water or sweat to the outer layers where it can then evaporate.
I’ve worn Galvin leggings for winter golf (along with runs and walks) since 2011 and they really are a game-changer. Paired with decent upper body base layer underneath your normal winter golf clothing, they ensure the cold never becomes an issue and allow you to focus on your game rather than your temperature.
Elof are exceedingly lightweight and their stretch construction ensures a comfortable fit for all.
2. ZeroFit Heatrub Ultimate Leggings
RRP £60 | VIEW OFFER
Sizes S-XL | Colours Black | Materials Acrylic 68%, Nylon 21%, Polyester 2%, Wool 7%, Polyurethane 2%
We love the Heatrub Ultimate Base Layer, so it’s not surprise that we also love the leggings. The beauty of ZeroFit’s products is that they’re not just for golf – they can be worn for any active sports or even working in cold condiotions, and once you’re used to the way they feel, they’re great.
In testing the leggings proved to be twice as warm as a regular pair of trousers and are comparable to fleece lined overtrousers, but with the added benefit of ease of movement.
The Heatrub technology, uses ‘double-loop’ barrel fabric which provides both heat insulation and ‘friction heating’. The extra-long bristles ensure a layer of warm air is retained around your legs and even just a little movement of these bristles causes friction which creates cosy warmth.
