A record 65 children signed up to learn a little about golf at the Gateway Junior Golf Clinic in Monroe. During two days of lessons followed by a clinic tournament, the children had a lot of fun practicing driving, chipping and putting.

“It was great, it was our biggest year yet,” said organizer and trainer Tony Ford. “We had so many kids this year that we had to do two different sessions and I think everyone was delighted. It was right after school so they were ready to go out and do something. “

The two sessions, held on June 7th and 9th, had the younger kids first for two hours while the older golfers came next for a couple of hours. Led by John Shawver, a PGA professional, along with the high school golf coaches, former coach Val Edwards, and many other volunteers, the kids had a great time learning to swing.

“We also had Matt Jennings this year, another pro in the area,” said Ford. “We tried to do the long drive and the chipping and putting games. Jim Tangeman was there and donated lots of golf clubs for kids to try out, and he also donated lots of golf balls for us to hand out. Jersey Freeze gave a couple of dollars in ice cream that we spent on prizes. And everyone likes Jersey Freeze. “

At the tournament on June 14th, the children were divided into small groups according to age in order to play three or four holes at different distances. Then there were awards with cups for the top three and medals for all participants.

“It was the smoothest tournament we’ve ever had,” said Ford. “I think it helped that we had so many kids that we could do two sessions. The number of volunteers also contributed to the fact that everything works so smoothly. “
