SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – He eats and he plays golf and that’s pretty much the life of a Sheboygan North golfer. That’s why he’s the FOX6 High School Hot Shot this week.
Mason Schmidtke and I are junior golfers at Sheboygan North High School.
“I’ve been playing golf for as long as I can remember,” said Mason Schmidtke. “My brother and I have both played golf since we were little, only in the back yard with plastic clubs and golf balls.”
Schmidtke attributes his passion for golf to his brother Max, who now plays golf at the University of South Dakota.
“He’s a great inspiration for me,” said Schmidtke. “He drives me, drives me, he has developed the love of the game for me more than anyone else ever.”
While he is not playing, Schmidtke is still on the pitch.

During his sophomore year, the teenager began working on a school program in Whistling Straits.
“I’ve been here for a few months and work as a GSA, so I help out with the scenery like an assistant,” said Schmidtke. “One day I’ll be working on the range or the bag drop is where I like to spend most of my time.”
As the course prepares for the Ryder Cup, it is quite exciting for the young golfer.
“It’s amazing,” he said. “The atmosphere is just great because every day you come out of here and think: ‘Well, that wasn’t there yesterday’ when it comes to construction. To be on a course like this and call it home, I’ll just try every day I can. “
Schmidtke says that when he’s not on the course, which isn’t much, he usually just eats or sleeps.
“There isn’t much,” said Schmidtke. “I’m pretty much on a golf course or at dinner. There will be days when I take a day off and just lie at home and watch TV or golf. But I just love the game so much.”
