Parksville Qualicum Beach golfers to tee off at the BC Junior Championships - Parksville Qualicum Beach News

Parksville Qualicum Beach’s top young golfers will compete for honors at the BC Junior Boys and Girls Golf Championships at the Morningstar Golf Club from June 29 to July 2.

At the top of the PQB is Gavyn Knight from Parksville, who aims to improve his 31st place in the 2019 championships. Since then, his game has improved after winning the Pheasant Glen Open in July and finishing seventh in the Future Links Fall Series BC event at Crown Isle Golf Club in September.

Last week, Knight had a promising result and tied for third place in the 2021 Callaway Junior Tour event on Morningstar. He is happy with the way he plays.

“It’s actually spinning in the right direction,” Knight said. “I’ve played a lot of golf here at Morningstar and I also work here. That is of course an advantage. “

Other participating PQB players include Jagre Knight of Parksville and Qualicum Beach golfers Mack Sanderson and Rodrigo Garcia Teruel.

Knight, who is attending Brentwood College in Mill Bay, enjoyed the opportunity to play the Calloway tournament ahead of the BC Juniors. Knight shot a 2 over par 74. He was even on the first nine, but on the back he had two birdies but four bogeys.

“Just getting this tournament round just for this environment is pretty big,” said Knight.

Playing regularly at one of the toughest golf clubs on Vancouver Island is sure to give Knight an edge as he knows what to be keen on in order to overcome the various challenges.

“Probably the short game for the greens,” Knight said. “The rough is quite thick here, so chipping can be a little tricky.”

The championships, in which 150 junior golfers from all over the province will participate, will take place on April 28th.

The first round starts on June 29th at 8 a.m. Knight will tee off at 9:50 a.m. He is grouped with defending champion BC Junior Boys Champion and Team Canada member Willy Bishop from Victoria and Hudson LaFayette from North Vancouver.
