BAR HARBOR, Maine (WABI) – Maine’s top golfers arrived at Kebo Valley Golf Club in Bar Harbor today to begin the 102nd game of the Maine Amateur Championship.
132 of the states that best represent 40 different golf clubs in 11 counties are participating in this year’s 54-hole event.
Many good results came at the end of the first round, but none better than Caleb Manuel of Brunswick Golf Club, who had a day to spare.
Manuel completed his last three holes with three birdies.
He finished 2 under par and is alone at the top of the rankings after Day 1.
We spoke to the clubhouse manager about his lap after leaving the 18th green and the rest of the field with the PGA pro in Kebo.
“I’m feeling pretty good with the score, I definitely didn’t get it as well as I wanted, I was planning on hitting fairways and greens and just having a stressful free round and it happens that you don’t do hit it well and you have to putter it and take a few recovery strokes so I’m definitely happy with the score after hitting it, ”said Caleb Manuel.
“The field is a stacked field. Expect a tight-knit group. Caleb had a really great finish today with the three birdies in a row so he may have broken up a bit, but I know Mike O’Brien is having an even round right now so they’re some good players in a close field. It will all come down to putting in the right positions and being under the hole, so I expect an exciting finish on Thursday, ”said Pieter DeVos, PGA Professional at Kebo Valley GC.

TV 5 sports will report more from Kebo Valley on Wednesday and Thursday for rounds two and three.
