OOLTEWAH, Tenn. – Men’s Golf in South Carolina opens on Monday at Scenic City Collegiate for the 2021-22 season. It’s a strong field with six SEC teams along with Clemson and Virginia from the ACC.
“We look forward to kicking off our season at Scenic City Collegiate this week,” said head coach Bill McDonald. “The Honors Course is one of the best in the country and I’m sure it will be a great test for our team. We had a very competitive qualification for this event and I feel like the guys are sharp and ready to play.” “
All-American Ryan Hall and Junior Jack Wall occupy the first two places in the line-up. North Greenville transfer Evans Lewis will make his Garnet and Black debut. Sophomore Rafe Reynolds and real newcomer Gene Zeigler will also play at the Columbia Country Club last week after impressive rounds in the team’s final qualifying phase. The highly praised Zeigler, a native of Florence, was the top ranked SCJGA player in the state.
Chattanooga is this week’s host school at a prestigious venue, the Honors Course, considered by many to be the top-rated golf club in the state of Tennessee and one of the top 100 golf courses in the country. The private club was founded in 1983 in honor of the amateur golfer. The championship golf course, designed by Pete Dye, was considered radical in the 1980s because of its large roughs of native grass, unusual fairways of zoysia grass, and fast greens. The Honors Course has hosted a variety of major amateur events over the years, including twice the NCAA Championship (1996 and 2010), the Curtis Cup, the US Amateur, and the US Junior Amateur.
The par-72 layout will play 7,376 yards this week. It’s a shotgun launch on Monday at 8 a.m. ET as teams will play 36 holes on the first day of the event.
