For the first time in more than three decades there is a new Head Pro at Westborough Golf Club.
Jack Negoshian had planned to retire towards the end of last season, but agreed to stay until July 31st to give the city more time to find a replacement on the city’s nine-hole golf course. Matt Griffith took over on August 1st.
“I thought it would be a great opportunity,” Griffith said, “for me to work with the City of Westborough and develop the game of golf on a great nine-hole course that a lot more people need to know about.”
Negoshian has been Head Pro since 1988.
“They are big footsteps,” said Griffith, “but I love challenges. He’s done amazing things here for a long time and I look forward to putting my stamp on Westborough and making it the best possible place. “
Griffith doesn’t plan on major changes, but hopes to improve the tournament software and create websites for each league.
Griffith has held numerous positions in golf, including seven years Head Pro at Blissful Meadows GC in Uxbridge before becoming Head Pro at Whitinsville GC for nearly five years. He has also worked as Head Pro and Assistant Pro on golf courses in North Carolina and South Carolina, and most recently was Member Day Coordinator for MassGolf. A native of Mathews County, Virginia, turned pro at the age of 19.
He may not stay in Westborough for 33 years like Negoshian, but he hopes to be around for a while.
“I’m really happy and comfortable here,” he said. “It’s 15 minutes from my house. I hope this is my last stop. “
Griffith and his wife, Meaghan, live with their rescue dog in Millbury, Saylor.
Now that he’s retired as Head Pro, Negoshian plays golf at Westborough most days.
“It’s great that he can now actually play golf out of debt,” said Griffith.
