It’s hard to imagine that people on the golf course would see a person “throwing” a golf ball and not think that the person is a little crazy; but “skid” takes off.
I only recently heard of FlingGolf when 5280 Magazine wrote a story about it and talked about a person who plays it in City Park Nine in Fort Collins. Even one of the guys behind the new “sport” attended Colorado State University. So this whole thing got my attention.
Simply put, it’s like lacrosse meets golf: you have this club, you throw the golf ball onto the fairway and you also use the club to put. You only carry one FlingStick while playing on any standard golf course.
I am a disc golfer. Over 98% of the disc golf courses are not even near a regular golf course, so I was really fascinated by this FlingGolf, which is right in the vicinity of a country club.
Am i jealous Maybe i am. ‘Flingers’ spend the day on beautiful golf courses, with beautiful clubhouses, and I throw next to a middle school. But then FlingGolf puts a standard golf ball in a standard golf course; I throw small frisbees on baskets. Disc golf is more different from golf than this FlingGolf.
I looked at how many courses you can play FlingGolf in Fort Collins and was surprised to find that almost all non-private courses have FlingGolfer on their course. Some, The Olde Course in Loveland, Cattail Course in Loveland, and Fox Acres at Red Feathers even have FlingStick rentals.
I spoke to Troy at Mariana Butte Golf, one of the town’s golf courses in Loveland, and got the views of that course on FlingGolf
There is definitely less wear and tear on the court; and you only have one stick so you don’t need a cart for people to play with even in the spring and winter months.
I asked for green fees for FlingGolf, and Troy said they play less than normal golf, but you have to pay. May I add that the majority of disc golf courses are free to play.
I have a good friend who plays on the Olde Course in Loveland and while he hasn’t seen anyone, he can see young people getting on it.
A stick. a ball, a course. I think I’ll stick with disc golf, but that’s me.
