The Top 59: SCORE Golf is one of the best public golf courses in Canada

SCOREGolf began ranking Canadian golf courses in 1988 and interviewed mostly golf professionals to compile a directory of the 15 best golf courses in the country. The list grew to 25, then 50, then 100 in 2000 and became the top 100 every two years, with Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Highlands Links named No. 1.

In 2015, the Top 59, a ranking of public golf courses, was born just to live up to criticism that the Top 100 contained too many private clubs that most readers would never play. Why 59? Because that’s golf’s magical number that has been carded a couple of times at the highest level of the game, including by Canadian Adam Hadwin, who did the trick in 2017. Also because 59 is more fun than 50. We felt like it gave the public some pizzazz. pecking order of course.

SCOREGolf now has a panel of 105 golf architecture enthusiasts who travel on their own to evaluate the courses based on the following criteria: beauty, strategy, challenge, design, par 3, par 4, par 5, stamina and fun factor. The categories have different percentage weightings of the overall grade of a course, with the fun factor being the highest at 20 percent. For the Top 59, a course must have been rated by at least seven panelists in the past seven years to be eligible.

It’s no surprise that Cabot Cliffs is at the forefront. The design by Bill Coore / Ben Crenshaw at Cabot Cape Breton in Inverness, NS, has only known pole position since its debut in 2015. It is Canada’s most dramatic course in the most dramatic setting, perched high on cliffs overlooking the Northumberland Strait. While the ocean holes are the show stoppers, the inland holes at Cabot Cliffs are just as entertaining. The course’s route leads golfers into swampy lowlands, through massive dunes and up to a wooded plateau before they come home by the water.

A course had to be rated by at least seven SCORGolf panelists to be eligible for this ranking. Resort advises that golfers must stay overnight at the accompanying resort in order to gain access to the golf course. Peak rate is the highest walking green fee on the site (with mandatory cart if necessary) and includes taxes.
