Art for Aviara | InspireDesign Innovative vision for today's hotel

Eaton Fine Art (EFA), a full-service Austin-based art consultancy, presents its art curation for the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club & Spa, a legendary five-star, five-diamond Forbes resort in Carlsbad, California , which reopened its doors in October 2020 after a major renovation. This spa and golf resort offers 327 newly designed guest rooms and suites offering superior rest and relaxation amid 500 acres of lush natural beauty overlooking the Batiquitos Lagoon, one of the few remaining tidal wetlands on the Southern California coast.

California-based architecture firm WATG and its interior design studio Wimberly Interiors have reimagined this estate-style resort with a transformative design that suits every element of the acclaimed property. The design team, led by Senior Associate Erin Nichols, drew inspiration from the resort’s stunning natural landscape – verdant rolling hills and valleys, lagoons, lush pathways, an abundance of wildlife and breathtaking ocean vistas – for the hotel, including its lobby Experience outdoor spaces, restaurants and bars, guest rooms, grand ballroom and meeting rooms.

A key component of the design was the curation of artworks that are displayed throughout the property and reflect the resort’s design. Wimberly Interiors has partnered with Austin-based art consultancy Eaton Fine Art to curate an art collection that further connects guests to nature and immerses them in the local cultural heritage. Featured artists are from Carlsbad, Oceanside, San Diego, Los Angeles, other parts of California and across the country.

Led by Gwendolyn Mesa, Director, Projects, Eaton Fine Art was commissioned to assemble a modern art collection for the resort’s courtyard, guest rooms, lobby, specialty restaurant and meeting and event spaces.

“[The artists’] Work conveys a sense of beauty inspired by the resort’s stunning natural landscape,” said Mesa. “For example, the guest rooms have a custom sculpture above the headboard that commemorates the birds of the local Batiquitos Lagoon. There are numerous sculptures and paintings throughout the property that also convey the calming sensation of water as well as the tranquil beauty of flowering plants or birds in flight.”

In curating the art program for Park Hyatt Aviara, the Eaton Fine Art team wanted each piece to have a subtle but thoughtful connection to the resort’s surroundings and its native birds and wildlife.

“It is important that the curated art collection creates a visual relationship with nature, especially for a resort surrounded by so much natural beauty that guests will find at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club & Spa,” said Terry Eaton, President / Chief Curator, Eaton Fine Art. “Biophilic design elements include the use of natural materials and shapes, and views that benefit from the environment. Works of art also reflect this nature.”

The collaboration between Wimberly Interiors and Eaton Fine Art resulted in the creation of modern, abstract bronze wall art for each guest room, which abstractly references the stately Great Blue Heron soaring in flight. Showcasing intricate references to the soft curves of this majestic bird, this modern artwork, along with paintings that recreate the pattern of native lagoon plants in sophisticated brushstrokes, creates an authentic escape from the everyday.

“The Park Hyatt Aviara Resort has many native Californian plants, blooming flowers and large trees, as well as the Batiquitos Lagoon. We wanted to bring those features into the buildings with a carefully curated art collection,” said Eaton.

Eaton Fine Art has worked with a number of California-based artists to curate remarkable artworks that not only create a warm and welcoming atmosphere in the public spaces, but also allow guests to further explore the beauty of the surrounding lagoon . Some pieces depict abstract views of rippling and flowing water, while others allude to the elegant curving of a wading bird’s neck or the hint of its wing in flight. The curated program features a variety of mediums and textures to add interest and sophistication to the collection.

“The connection to nature found with the three-dimensional and two-dimensional art curated throughout the property engages guests and encourages travelers to enjoy the beauty of nature,” said Eaton. “Biophilically-inspired art also promotes hotel staff’s understanding of how art can blend with the natural beauty surrounding their property.”

Highlights include a metal mesh wall sculpture behind the concierge desk in the lobby, which greets visitors with a unique composition and shapes that reference water droplets and lily pads commonly seen in the nearby lagoon. Opposite the lobby reception and concierge is the art gallery, which houses a large-scale commissioned painting by a local artist, featuring brushstrokes in colors associated with the lagoon, such as blue, turquoise, and sand. Another highlight in the public area is a free-standing sculpture located at the entrance to the ballrooms and meeting rooms. Crafted from dark walnut, the sculpture unexpectedly takes on the shape and curvature of the wing of a gray heron, standing seven feet tall. high on a stone plinth.

The team worked closely with the selected artists and craftsmen to ensure safe delivery for the shipment of art materials and supplies for the public spaces – ahead of the expected opening date.

The carefully curated artwork achieves a sophisticated, elevated, and casually elegant aesthetic in the guest rooms and public spaces, something owner Xenia Hotels & Resorts Inc. wanted for the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club & Spa. The result is an updated resort with a dramatically modernized, sleek design with a distinctly residential experience for guests to enjoy.
