The new clubhouse at Falmouth Golf Club opened on a special open house this week.

State-of-the-art facilities include Above the Bay, where non-members and members alike can dine, drink and enjoy spectacular views of Falmouth Bay from the bar, restaurant or wraparound balcony and terrace.

The view offers a different perspective of the bay, looking towards Swanpool, then Pendennis Castle and all the way over to the lighthouse at St. Antony’s Head.

With a capacity of more than 100 seats, Above the Bay is open to everyone, including non-members, and can host weddings, celebrations, business breakfasts, meetings and seminars with ample parking.

There’s a long bar with a range of draft beers and ciders that runs in the main rooms. The bar, like the rooms, can be divided into two parts if several events are taking place.

The focus is on the new 18th hole, which is to be completed in the coming years. Described by many as the most spectacular finishing hole in the West Country, it was designed by leading golf course architect David Weller and built by specialist contractor European Golf Services.

The hole plays in the direction of the new clubhouse in about 150 meters and it has a stadium feeling, as the spectators can see the field from the clubhouse balcony.

Raised hills on the left as you tee off towards a sloping green.

The spacious golf changing rooms are accompanied by new shower rooms.

The development also includes a brand new golf shop to the right of the clubhouse that PGA golfer Nick Rogers will run from Falmouth Golf Club, as well as an indoor golf training studio that he plans to open in early December.

The project began over 17 years ago, with it taking several years to finance construction and a number of building permits before construction of the final project could begin.

The new Above the Bay clubhouse attracted widespread admiration from those who saw it yesterday at a special invitee open day where local resident and club member Keith Rashleigh described it as “the best thing that has happened to Falmouth in years.”

Regarding the construction process, owner David Hughes said, “It’s been a long journey with lots of thrills and spills. I am happy to have finally made it and thank everyone who carried me and helped me on my way. ”

David added that bookings for weddings and the rooms will be available for the next few weeks when the construction team makes final changes to the rooms and organizes a wedding planner for the club.

A new footpath is to connect the golf club with the Hooked on the Rocks restaurant on Swanpool Beach and will be opened shortly.

The building was designed by architects Heighway Field Associates according to the owner’s specifications and built for him by a subsidiary of Verto Homes.
