Barbara Padgette, a longtime Atlanta and Flowery Branch resident, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 12, in the presence of her family.
Born July 26, 1935, in Albemarle, NC, to Paul and Cornell Rogers, Barbara met the love of her life, Doug Padgette, in Saluda, SC high school. Cheerleader and beauty queen Barbara and athlete, engineer and future pilot Doug married in 1955, after college in Winthrop and Clemson, respectively. After serving in the Air Force, the couple moved to Burlington, NC, where their two sons were born, then to Orlando, FL, Princeton, NJ, and finally Atlanta, GA. In 1994 they retired to Lake Lanier.
Barbara loved to travel and have fun, cruises, beach vacations, golf vacations, Las Vegas trips, and lots of houseboat weekends, as well as organizing and attending myriad of subdivision parties with neighbors. Barbara’s love of boating opened up a whole new world for the family, and the memories of Lake Lanier and their many close friendships have always been a source of great joy for both Barbara and Doug. Barbara loved nothing more than cruising the lake with Doug, her family and friends.
Barbara is best described as one of the nicest, noblest and most beautiful women her family and friends have ever met. She devoted her life to her family, and perhaps her two sons benefited most from it. Barbara worked with Doug to create a family-centered, friendly environment that everyone wanted to be children, spouses, and friends. Barbara made the exclamation mark in her hospitality through her kitchen, and favorites included pecan cake, lemon meringue cake, chocolate treat, tuna salad, and margaritas. Barbara’s and Doug’s warm home on Lake Lanier was especially appreciated by the grandchildren and their friends, where a good meal was usually prepared after a day of skiing and activities on the lake.
Barbara was preceded in death in 2019 by Doug, her husband of 64 years. Barbara is led by her sister Cheryl Efird from Norwood, NC, sister Paula Shedd from Norwood, NC, son Steve Padgette and wife Dominique Francx from Steamboat Springs, CO and Flowery Branch, GA, son Mark, and wife Michelle. survived Padgette from Dacula, GA, and grandson Chris Padgette from St. Petersburg, FL, Lauren Deavenport from Bangkok, Thailand, Eric Padgette from Denver, CO, Hannah Padgette from Boulder, CO, Alec Padgette from Atlanta, GA, Erika Padgette from Dacula , GA and great-granddaughter Hadley Deavenport from Bangkok, Thailand. Barbara’s love for Doug and her family will live on forever.
