HATTIESBURG, miss. (USM Athletics) – When Valentina Haupt places her golf ball on the opening hole around 8:16 a.m. (CT) Thursday, she becomes the first woman in the history of the Southern Miss program to appear in an event organized by the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA ).
Haupt will play in the 2021 LPGA Classic Marathon presented by Dana at the 6,578-yard par 71 Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio. She was supposed to play at the 2020 event but that has been postponed until this summer due to COVID-19.
Born in Santiago, Chile, Haupt secured her place in this event by finishing fifth with a two-under 211 at the Energy Producers, Inc. Texas Women’s Open in June 2020. Usually only the winner of that tournament gets an exception to an LPGA event, but the top four performers already had full LPGA status, so the next nod went to main.
Her college career, which spanned 2015-19, included a slew of honors and records. She remains the only Golden Eagle to be a WGCA All-American Scholar every four years, while her last appearance in her tenure as the Southern Miss at the C-USA Championships was a career low of two under 214.
Her 115 career rounds are on par for the school record, and her average of 76.22 strokes ranks fifth. She was also a senior SAAC president, graduated with a 3.9 GPA, and was named a Who’s Who of Southern Miss Students.
