Electronic Arts’ golf simulator, next year’s EA Sports PGA Tour, will feature LPGA Tour courses and multiple playable female golfers.
A new golf video game was announced by Electronic Arts earlier this year. Built with the Frostbite game engine, EA Sports PGA Tour is the continuation of the PGA Tour series that started in 1990. Most of the entries were made by professional golfer Tiger Woods until Rory McIlroy replaced him in 2015. Almost six years have passed since this launch, and the upcoming EA Sports PGA Tour will be adding new and improved features to the golf game series, including, for the first time, famous women from the LPGA.
The LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) was founded in 1950 and is the oldest ongoing professional women’s sports organization in the United States. Since 2006, the LPGA has included a championship of the defending champions at the end of the season for the women with the highest points of the entire season. Another notable LPGA tournament is the Amundi Evian Championship, which will be played when the EA Sports PGA Tour arrives on next generation systems. There will also be some other features in the game for LPGA fans.
LPGA representation on the EA Sports PGA Tour was partially overseen by GOLFTV and Sky Sports broadcaster Iona Stephen, who commented on many LPGA events. Stephen will be the first female commentator on the pitch on the PGA Tour series. Stephen said she was excited to see female athletes represented in the upcoming game and hopes to see Electronic Arts at “giv[ing] Women get the satisfaction of playing a quality game of golf while viewing themselves in a variety of ways that go beyond a handful of female character models. ”
In addition to Stephen’s commentary and the inclusion of the Amundi Evian Championship, the EA Sports PGA Tour will have prominent LPGA pros in the game. One of these pros is Jin Young Ko, a Korean golfer who has won multiple awards and tournaments over the course of her career and who finished as the number one player at the end of the 2020 LPGA season. EA has the chance to win other big names in LPGA golf, such as Lydia Ko, Brooke M. Henderson, and Jessica and Nelly Korda. Players can create and customize their own golfer for use in EA Sports PGA Tour’s many game modes.
The inclusion of LPGA athletes and events in the EA Sports PGA Tour is a good addition to the franchise and can give it an edge over the competing golf game series PGA Tour 2K. Although the PGA Tour 2K21 sold well after its release last August, one of the biggest criticisms was the lack of LPGA Tour events, courses, and golfers. More information on the EA Sports PGA Tour’s LPGA content is likely to be revealed in the coming months as Spring 2022 approaches.
EA Sports PGA Tour should appear in spring 2022.
