The Central Mass team. The PGA Junior League will travel to the Northeast Regional at the Edison Club in Rexford, New York, September 10-12.
The Central Mass. All-Star Team, comprised of golfers ages 10-13 from Highfields Golf & CC at Grafton, Green Hill Municipal Golf Course, Wachusett CC and Stow Acres CC qualified second in the New England Section Championship on Aug 2 -3 at Stow Acres CC.
With Dermot Duggan of Highfields and Jacob Carlson of Stow Acres shooting a 7-under-28 in a nine-hole two-person scramble format, Central Mass was. the lowest qualifier on the first day of competition.
In the match play semi-finals on August 3, teams Duggan and Carlson, Adrian Machado and Ned Olney of Green Hill, Nolan Engelhardt of Wachusett and Sophie Kamel of Highfields, Cael Duggan and Dominic Toscano of Highfields scored a 9½-2½ victory over Bristol County from Massachusetts.
Central Mass. fell 9-3 in the final against Kirkbrae CC from Lincoln, Rhode Island.
The top two teams from New England will compete against two from New York in the Northeast Regional, and the winner will advance to the PGA Junior League Championship October 7-10 at the Grayhawk Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Central Mass. last qualified for Northeast Regional in 2018. A total of 275 youngsters from 34 teams competed in New England.
David Carlson, general manager and golf director at Stow Acres, is the captain of the Central Mass. Teams and Jacob’s father. He will accompany the team to the Northeast Regional.
“It’s exciting and unexpected,” said Carlson. “When there are 30 All-Star Teams, you always expect some teams to be stacked and it just happened that our team is very strong. It was a lot of fun to watch them play and win. “
