TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT / KSVT) – A Twin Falls High School golfer returned home shortly after participating in two major tournaments.
Derek Lekkekerk finished second in the Rocky Mountain Sectional Championship in Big Sky, Montana and qualified for the Junior PGA Championship.
He returned home, repacked, and drove to Pinehurst, North Carolina to attend the 2021 High School Golf National Invitational. Lekkerkerk was ranked 63rd out of more than 320 golfers from 49 countries.
The budding junior qualified for the national championship by winning the 4A state individual championship in May.
He shot an 81 on the first day, followed by 74 and 77. Lekkerkerk told KMVT that after his second result of the day he made the second largest jump and improved by 76 places.
“There is always room for improvement in this game. You’re never perfect and I think that’s what makes me and a lot of people come back, ”explained Lekkerkerk. “So the goal is always to get better. I have a few things on the back of my mind, but I’ll just keep my head up, forward one shot at a time.”
Lekkerkerk is now preparing for the Junior PGA Championship taking place next week in Lexington, Kentucky.
The following week the Callaway World Championship in San Diego.
Reece Garey of Kimberly, Idaho State’s 3A golf champion, also accepted the National High School invitation and finished 130th out of over 210 golfers.
