Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii – Winning the PGA TOUR is the only way to qualify for the Sentry Tournament of Champions 2022. Lucas Herbert and Viktor Hovland were the last players to qualify for the Champions-Only event when it returns to the Plantation Course in Kapalua January 5-9.
World Wide Technology Championship in Mayakoba
Hovland earned his third PGA TOUR title of his career en route to becoming the first player to successfully defend his World Wide Technology Championship in Mayakoba. The 24-year-old followed a career-low score of 9-under 62 to set the event’s 72-hole scoring record and defeat Carlos Ortiz in one fell swoop. With the victory, the Norwegian moved up to 4th place in the FedExCup ranking and 10th place in the Official World Golf Ranking. Hovland is qualified for a return trip to the Sentry Tournament of Champions, where he finished T31 on his tournament debut last year.
Butterfield Bermuda Championship
Born in Australia, Herbert took his first PGA TOUR win at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship in his 20th career. The TOUR rookie moved into the final round four strokes back and took third victory from behind when he finished with a 2-under 69 to defeat Patrick Reed and Danny Lee in one fell swoop. The 25-year-old earned a PGA TOUR membership for this season through the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, highlighted by a T4 finish at the Albertsons Boise Open 2021. The victory in Bermuda qualified Herbert for his first trip to the Sentry Tournament of Champions.
The two remaining opportunities on the PGA TOUR plan for players to earn a spot in the field at the Sentry Tournament of Champions 2022 are the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open and The RSM Classic.
Currently, 39 players have qualified for the Sentry Tournament of Champions based on their PGA TOUR wins this calendar year, including nine first-time winners.
