In an opening round of one under par at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, Lucas Herbert started on Friday five strokes behind the lead. The 25-year-old, who started on the 10 par-four, got off to a slow start to the round at the legendary Port Royal Golf Course after having consecutive bogeys on holes 11 and 12 before hitting two consecutive birdies on the map bets to bring him back to even par. On the par-three 16, which has a challenging tee over a cliff, Herbert hit his ball close in preparation for an easy birdie. NEWS: The swing continued on the 17th par-5 after Herbert used a solid approach shot for another birdie. Same par on the turn, then six straight pars before hitting another birdie on par five, followed by two more pars to end the day on an under. Herbert is currently T25 in the leaderboard and is five strokes behind the leaders Brandon Hagy and Chad Ramey (six below). Herbert had the best score in the Australian contingent, followed by Brett Drewitt, Greg Chalmers and John Senden in the one-over. Victorian comrade Cameron Percy, meanwhile, had a tough day at five. Herbert returned to the second course on Friday at 10:30 p.m. AEDT along with Brandon Wu and Mito Pereira. A handful of players couldn’t finish the first round due to the darkness and will continue the first round on Friday morning.
