Proudly ascends to the Queensland Senior PGA title - PGA of Australia

A brilliant bogey-free round of 5 under 67 led Andre Stolz to victory in the Queensland Senior PGA Championship at Maroochy River Golf Club.

SParms Legends Tour Order of Merit leader, Proud, started the second round three strokes behind leading Richard Backwell from day one but mastered the tricky winds and faster greens to a six-under win for a two-stroke To achieve victory.

Australian 2020 Senior PGA Champion Proud won five events in July and August but had only recently returned to tournament play after suffering health problems in Brisbane in September.

He made a positive return at the Gold Coast Senior PGA Championship last week and on Monday showed exactly why he’s the best local player in the country’s 50 and over.

Without his health problems, Stolz might have been to the US for the Champions Tour final qualifying this week to win the grand prize at the first Sunshine Coast Series event instead.

“I’m very happy with this win as it was a real fight out there, but proud of how I kept it together,” said Stolz.

“I didn’t have a bogey today with the wind and the greens much faster than yesterday.”

Four-time Order of Merit winner Brad Burns failed on the challenging final hole to score four under 68 and finished third with two strokes behind Stolz, Chris Taylor (71), Glenn Joyner (69) and Peter Senior (71) second place three-under.

Allan Cooper finished in a draw in 19th place, but left Maroochy River with one of the highlights of the day, a hole-in-one on the difficult 176-yard par-3 eighth hole.

The SParms PGA Legends Tour now goes on Tuesday for the Headland Legends Pro-Am at the Headland Golf Club, which serves as the third round of the Sunshine Coast Council sponsored Sunshine Coast Series.
